Agroforestry

A definition:

[Agroforestry]...involves the intentional manipulation of forested lands to produce food, medicinal or decorative products in addition to timber and firewood. Forest crops with economic potential in the Northeast include the herbal medicinal plants American ginseng (panex quinquefolium) and golden seal (hydrastis canadensis), a variety of mushrooms and sugar maple (acer saccharum) sap.

Ahimsa Village property is mostly wooded.  It features a mix of hardwoods and pine forest.  Our plan is to engage in the following agroforestry activities:

  1. Mushroom production including Maitake and Shiitake.
  2. Ginseng and golden seal production
  3. Forest herbs
  4. Maple sugaring - the property has a large sugar bush uphill from a shed.
